Lab: Collisions and Video Analysis

First, some stuff about collisions.  Check out this older lab page about collisions.

Now, the videos.  Here is a video tutorial on using video analysis.

What about the video files.  Here they are.

Now, what can you do?  Consider the following questions for each case:

  • Calculate the momentum before and after the collision (with uncertainty).
  • Calculate the kinetic energy before and after the collision (with uncertainty).
  • For each collision, is it elastic or inelastic or somewhere in between?
  • Can you estimate the average force between the two carts during the interaction?

Finally, if you want to be really awesome, think of a way you can model these collisions in python.  Hint: you have to be a little trick, but if the python program agrees with the actual data – that is good.
