Thursday Practice Problem

Here is the in-class practice problem for class on Thursday:

A 2 kg block of ice is launched up a wooden incline that has a 25 degree angle.  The coefficient of kinetic friction between the ice and wood is 0.1.  If the ice is pushed up the incline with an initial speed of 0.78 m/s,

  • How far up the incline will it go before stopping?
  • How long will this motion take (to stop)?
  • After the block reaches the highest point, it starts to slide back down.  How long will it take to reach the starting point (from the highest point)?
  • How fast will the block be moving when it gets back to the starting point?
